The same, but different

For those of you that haven't been paying attention, last week I introduced you all to Drowsy Doug. The lame idea that I had floating around in my head was that Drowsy Doug would always have plans to do something, but the running gag would be that he falls asleep in the last panel of every strip without actually having accomplished anything at all.

In an act of sheer desperation brought on by mind numbing sleep deprivation, I thought it would be amusing if the drawings never actually changed in the strip. The running gag would obviously remain the same as well. The only difference would be the dialogue.

So what you see here is exactly the same strip that I posted last week, but different, kind of.

He speaks robot

I'm sure you'll all agree that the robot does make some valid points.

Drowsy Doug

I've had this idea in my head for awhile about a comic where the main character (Drowsy Doug) always has plans to do something, but the running gag is that he falls asleep on the last panel of every strip without actually having accomplished anything.

A crumby pun

In my defence, I drew this at 2:00 in the morning while in a state of insomnia induced delirium. Let me tell you, imagining two slices of bread having this conversation seemed ridiculously amusing to me at the time.

Gary

Yesterday I mentioned that I will soon be launching a comic strip, and I suggested that the characters would likely be potatoes. However, after posting that remark yesterday morning, I found myself thinking about a certain cube by the name of Gary. I literally thought about him all day. As ridiculous as this may sound, I felt as if I was abandoning him. I've become rather attached to the little square fella.

The strip itself, at this point, isn't built around specific characters. The gags that I have written will work whether Gary is delivering the lines, or a potato, or a unicorn with a beard.

What I discovered today, as I was organizing my character sketches, is that Gary somehow resonated with me more than all the others.

So, needless to say, I have reconsidered my decision.

You will all be seeing much more of Gary in the near future.

Changes

I have a couple of new newsworthy news items to pass along from Jason Curtis World Headquarters.

In the coming weeks, my family and I will be moving. Over the years we have lived in many different homes, in different cities, but now it’s time to settle into our forever home and plant some roots.

Seeing as we have moved so many times, the act of packing up a house (and then unpacking it on the other end) doesn’t even phase me anymore. With that said, it’s a very time consuming process and as a result, I won’t be posting drawings on a regular basis.

Once Jason Curtis World Headquarters has been successfully relocated and is operational again, I will be launching a comic. I have been working tirelessly behind the scenes and it’s almost ready to see the light of day. When it does launch, I will be posting it a minimum of three times per week. If I’m feeling particularly brave, I may throw caution to the wind and commit to a schedule of five times per week.

I have several sets of characters that I have been developing. It’s been like an audition process. I think the winners may very well be these guys. Yes, they’re potatoes.

The final change will be my actual workflow. I have been drawing entirely on my iPad Pro for over a year now. I will continue to use it for creating digital roughs, but the inking will be done traditionally. I will have more to say about this in a future post.

That is all for now. Carry on.

2018

You don't need to point out the obvious. I know this doesn't make any sense. I just figured that if I start the new year off by setting the bar extremely low, things can only get better.

Happy Blue Smear everyone!
