Final doodle of 2015

This is a busy time of year. With the kiddies out of school now and family to visit over the coming days, this will be my final doodle of 2015.

It's been fun. Let's do it all again in 2016.

A bad boy

Lately I have been filling my sketchbook with characters that have bodies made up of words. I'm not entirely sure if it works, but I'm having fun experimenting.

Keep your distance

Ducks look so cute from a distance...but have you ever seen one up close? I wouldn't recommend it.

Bird on a...

I'm not sure why I drew this.

Bird on a wire looks more sophisticated, but Bird on a tire has such a fashionable scarf. I wonder which one the lady birds would prefer?

A higher power

Bread worship.

If ducks believed in a God, I'm sure it would be a slice of white bread.

Fish Head Friday

Unfortunately, Mr. Fish Head will probably end up accidently stumbling off the sidewalk into oncoming traffic where he will be run over by a bus...but at least he will be warm when he meets his demise.

Ink Overload

I used a lot of ink on this doodle. It would have been easier and faster to fill the blacks digitally, but I was enjoying the fumes from my marker far too much.

Facial Hair Friday

This is guaranteed to be the most exciting thing you see all day. If it's not the most interesting thing you see today, I will hand write a letter of apology and personally deliver it to you.

Disobedient Pants

Not only did the pants ignore him and walk away, but I bet they took his wallet and keys too.

There's nothing worse than a pair of disobedient pants.

Art Trade

My very talented artist friend, Colin West, sent me some absolutely beautiful pieces of his work. In return, I drew this for him. I hope you like it, Colin. I'll be shipping it off to the UK within the next couple of days.

Strut your stuff

I was not at all happy with the last drawing I posted ("Real men have moustaches that wear their own boots"). As I was pondering the reasons why I disliked it so much, I flipped through my sketchbook and stopped on the page that was filled with this character. The doodle of this guy strutting across the page appealed to me because it had personality.

For me personally, I prefer off-the-wall character designs. After all, this is cartooning and I'm not at all limited to the confines of reality...so why keep things looking normal! I have to remind myself to exaggerate proportions, and poses, and expressions.

I need to strut my stuff more.

Sadly, I am not a real man. My facial hair has no footwear.

I have returned

It begs the question...what condiment would go best with socks?

While you ponder that, I just wanted to let everyone know that I'm back! To recap, my wife and I, along with our 2 boys, sold our home and moved roughly 5 hours (by car) from where we were living. The house hunting didn't exactly go as planned, but we eventually found and bought a beautiful lakefront home. The catch is that we don't take possession until April 2016. In the meantime, we are temporarily renting a house while we wait.

My studio space was hastily thrown together, but it's functional and I should be able to post my humble doodles on a regular basis, whether you like it or not.

It's good to be back.

Don't forget about me

This news report isn't entirely accurate. I don't know where Stan gets his facts. However, I will be away for some time. The reason isn't quite as intriguing as alien abduction though.

For those of you that follow me, you'll know that my family and I are moving. My wife starts her new job tomorrow. Our new home town is 5 hours away so she will be living in a hotel until it is time for all of us to move into our new house. During this time, I will be alone with our two wild and crazy boys for approximately 5 weeks.

My boys are in perpetual motion and don't believe in the concept of sleep. As a result, I will have absolutely no time to draw and post any doodles. Hopefully by late September though I will have my studio set up in our new abode.

I'm sure Stan will report on my return.

Planet of the (Gr)apes

The 1968 version of Planet of the Apes is one of my all time favourite films, and I've always loved the line "Take your stinking paws off me you damn dirty ape."

I'm not sure if the movie would have had the same impact if grapes replaced apes.

Thank you...thank you very much

This one is dedicated to my sister-in-law, Liz. She loves elephants, and the colour pink...although I'm not sure if she's a fan of Elvis.

There will be no more drawings until next week. I will be out of town once again dealing with more house hunting/moving/general life chaos related stuff.

Consider yourself warned

Never allow a Bearded Barfing Beast to sneak up behind you. If you do, things will get messy.

I don't want to give the impression that Bearded Barfing Beasts purposefully barf on humans though. That is not the case. They barf indiscriminately, on whatever happens to be in front of them at the time. So if it happens to you please don't take it personally.

The power of levitation

I'm sure a Hollywood studio will be calling me any minute now, asking to buy the rights to Levitation Man. It's got summer blockbuster written all over it.

Just imagine this action sequence...

An evil doer corners Levitation Man in an abandoned warehouse, then throws a handful of thumbtacks onto the ground. Levitation Man quickly uses his power of levitation to rise off the ground 3 inches above the tacks...but the clock is ticking down. He can only levitate for a total of 8 minutes. Cue the dramatic music. Cut to a close up of Levitation Man's face as a bead of sweat trickles past his impeccably groomed sideburns.

I'd pay to see what happens, wouldn't you?

Well folks, after I post this drawing I will most likely be away from home for the rest of the week. I won't be able to post any more drawings during that time.

Billy, Bobby, Buddy...and Rick

Over the weekend I found myself endlessly doodling these odd creatures in my sketchbook. I filled several pages with nothing but these long-legged, big-mouthed, bulgy-eyed, pointy-haired, sock-wearing monsters.

I'm not exactly sure what they are, although I'm pretty confident that I saw something similar in the back of our fridge last week.

Captains

While grocery shopping earlier this week I walked past the frozen food section and happened to notice Captain Highliner frozen fish sticks. In my hand was a fineliner, which I use to cross off the items on my list.

I thought to myself, "Hey, Captain Highliner...Captain Fineliner!" It amused me, so I drew it.
