Here's a quick little sketch I did while waiting for the microwave to heat up some soup (yes, that's about the extent of my kitchen capabilities).
Apparently (according to what I scribbled underneath the doodle) Doug likes taco's.
As much as I'm enjoying working with the Pentel Pocket Brush pen on Strathmore Bristol, I still love the look of a hastily drawn doodle in a notebook. In fact, I think I like them more. I personally find stuff like this amusing because it isn't at all refined. The lines have life. The looseness and spontaneity of it seems to compliment my strange little characters...or at least in my opinion.
Any thoughts on this matter?

I love the look of quick sketches too -- yours and other peoples'. They're very different drawings, both good, but with different life to them.
My doodles are always more satisfying to me than the drawings I labor over, it's like they don't go through the same filtering process and so they come out more like the way I think. Um, sloppily, I guess.
I couldn't agree more! I LOVE LOVE LOVE drawing in notebooks. It feels more raw and alive and I think it's important to show your versatility as an artist. When we see your refined work, we do love it, but we love quick sketches like this too. It just shows that you can make it work; regardless of the media.
I like Doug. I like the colors and the subtle details.
Awesome work, Jason.
I like both. I think as a general style, I find that one more appealing...more round and complete... this is a sketch, yes-- but the lines arent in pencil. If it were drawin in a pencil, or something with alot of texture and spaz, then I would have enjoyed that, the shading, etc...but since this looks like pen (just done rougher) I would say I enjoy the other style as an end result.
Love the colours..his shirt colour is beautiful...i love the grease (Im assuming) around his mouth.
Have a great weekend!
he looks like he's in a tacoma (taco + coma = tacoma). and i agree with you, the line quality gives doug more life.
It might be fun to try doing some of your quick sketches with the brush pen-it'll seem awkward at first, but once you feel more comfortable with it, you might really love what you come up with.
Either way, your stuff is always great, Jason.
Thank you all for your thoughtful insights, much appreciated.
...and Michael, I really think I should try to doodle with the brush pen. It might lead to some interesting results.
I agree that doodles have a spontaneity that makes them livelier. I also personally feel that your finished stuff has an overall fun graphic emphasis and this has a more comical one. Nice both ways!
I prefer your 2 approaches! :D
A number of times, I prefer the rough sketches of my initial ideas better than the finished product.
To me, a hastily drawn doodle has a style of its own too. :)
Justdoodleit and Gavin - Thanks for your input.
You do draw 24X7, righta? Anyway. I love the fact that he likes tacos! And he looks unusually cute. I can imagine a whole film with this character!
Jazzlamb - I actually don't draw that much to be honest, I simply don't have the time. I usually spend a few minutes each day creating my daily doodle for Happy Fun Hour, but nothing more.
