Tuned in but tuned out

Everywhere I look people seem to have earbuds on. I personally don't like the feeling of disconnect when I'm out for a walk and can't hear the environment around me. Heck, I don't even own an ipod...am I the only one?

I was out the other day pushing my son in his stroller, and on the sidewalk ahead of me were two girls, walking the in same direction as me but at a much slower pace. Both of them were listening to their ipods and didn't hear me come up behind them, even when I said "excuse me please". I ended up having to drive off the sidewalk in order to get around them, and as I came up beside them the girl closest to me jumped because she hadn't realized I was there.

What if I'd been a crazed axe murderer?

Anyway, that situation prompted me to doodle this little ditty.

Notice the retro Sony Walkman he's listening to. Oh, those were the days!

Very very true. Those girls were lucky!

That little dude isn't going to be too happy when he falls in that pit hehe.

But you're right, I also see a lot of young people walking around with earbuds in. Sometimes I do it as well, especially when I have days that I just want to walk around minding my own business. But I do have the volume on such a level that I still hear sounds in my surroundings or that people still can ask me stuff if they need to. Very often the people I see are listening on such a loud volume that I think they can go deaf at some point. Really way too loud and annoying for others.

I didn't even notice they were in their underwear until my third look. I've either grown accustomed to this no pants thing or I was too distracted by the pit and the thiiiings within. Ewwww.

I saw a woman shopping at the grocery store yesterday who had just one ear bud in. Seemed like a good solution if you just can't bear to be unplugged.

I share in your frustration. How ever I do enjoy walking around, even ridding my bike around the city with my over sized DJ style ear phones on listening to music. All of a sudden I'm in a Woody Allen movie. I'm always going to be an idiot in some one else's eyes so why not roll with it some times.

Any how really funny illustration as always.

Well, walking about with Walkmans plugged is kinda funny, but not as much as folks carrying lightsabers around.

i love that they're strolling about in their undies...and that his walkman (which is awesome btw) is clipped it!
my most ridiculous encounter with a plugged person was in september. it was the first day of class of grad school and a student had his headphones in...while the prof was trying to talk to him...he claimed they weren't on but still, they were in his ears and it was just rude.

Justdoodleit - Lightsabers huh? Can't say I've seen that.

Krishna - Yeah, that is rude. It just shows a big 'ol lack of respect in my opinion.
